Experienced SEOs understand the need for keeping up on changes in the constantly evolving search space. That’s why I’m so passionate about continuing SEO education and training. The upcoming SMX West conference taking place March 2-5 in Santa Clara, CA, is one such opportunity I recommend to fellow advanced-level SEOs.

The advanced-level content that will be shared at SMX West is set to span a variety of fields and specialties, so check out the full agenda for all the offerings. Meanwhile I’ve gone over the agenda with an SEO-focused gaze and I’ve drafted an “Advanced SEO’s Dream Agenda” to be my guide while navigating the presentations, conversations and events at the show.

Tuesday, March 2 – Local SEO and Real-Time Search

SEO Training instructor and search marketing expert Bruce Clay

The conference kicks off strong with the opening keynote by Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer. Any SEO interested in keeping up with latest developments of the search landscape will be in attendance to hear this outspoken officer’s address to the search marketing community. Here’s hoping we learn more about the impending partnership between Bing and Yahoo! and what it could mean for marketers.

As an advanced SEO, one thinks a lot about how various pieces of the Internet marketing puzzle can be leveraged together for greatest effect. That’s why on Day 1, I’ll be taking advantage of the sessions that drill down into the specific SEO areas of local search and real-time search.

I suggest starting the day at Real Time Search & The Major Search Engines followed by Real Time Search: Beyond The Majors. A newly introduced search arena, real-time search results pose new challenges and considerations to SEOs. The first session promises to outline how to optimize content for real-time search and how to avoid being labeled as real-time spam. The following session aims to familiarize the audience with upcoming real-time search tools and opportunities.

In the afternoon, head to Ranking Tactics For Local Search to learn about the ranking factors that help a site rank in local search. I predict that local search is an SEO vertical that will boom in 2010; yet local search is often underappreciated and underutilized by businesses today. Attendees of this session can look forward to learning about crucial local search factors, allowing them to tap into the growing marketing potential of local search.

Vying for the attention of advanced SEOs at the same time is the session Keyword Research: Beyond the Ordinary. If you aren’t dealing with local search optimization in your practice, then you’ll want to hit up this advanced-level session focused on innovative approaches to keyword research. Keyword research is one of the foundational, continuous tasks of SEO. In my experience, you can never know enough about your targeted keywords. Going beyond the ordinary with keyword research may just push your search marketing to the next level.

For the last session of the day I recommend checking out the advanced-level session Supercharging Your Descriptions With Sitelinks. If you’re lucky enough to get them, Sitelinks are a powerful way to give searchers exactly what they’re looking for on your site. Find out how to maximize your odds of obtaining Google Sitelinks in search results, and what to do once you’ve got them.

Of course, after an intense and action-packed Day 1, you’ll find me chatting and kicking back at the SMX West Expo Hall Reception in the evening. Sponsored by Ask.com, the first evening event of the conference holds great conversations and networking in store.

Wednesday, March 3 — Speed, Strength and Universal Search

If Day 1 is dedicated to local search and real-time search, Day 2 of my advanced SEO dream agenda expands upon those areas with sessions about blended search and site speed optimization.

The sessions offered in the morning include the opportunity to learn about Twitter Marketing Tactics. You can also take advantage of cross-channel boosts seen when search and display work together at Search Meet Display; Display Meet Search. Both of these sessions are top-rated from shows past, so you can trust that they’re going to be good. If you’ve already attended either session at a past conference, come by the Bruce Clay, Inc. booth and say hello!

Blended search results changed the game when they were first introduced in 2007, and the use of Engagement Objects™ has been central to my SEO methodology ever since. During Universal & Blended Search Opportunities, SEOs will learn the latest tactics and content types that raise the potential of SERP real estate through engaging, non-text content.

Along with the speed injected into search results through real-time content, Google’s looking to make the Web faster overall. Webmasters must pay special attention to the speed of their site because long load times could hinder the indexing of your site and may even be a factor for rankings. The Need for Speed: Google Says It Matters is a technical SEO session not to be missed.

Also on the technical SEO track, I’d recommend the advanced-level Industrial Strength SEO for search marketers working with enterprise organizations. Large-scale SEO projects present unique technical obstacles as well as challenges of communication and cooperation between team members, executives and stakeholders. Attendees of this session are sure to walk away with actionable recommendations for navigating the landmines of enterprise SEO.

Thursday, March 4 — Pulling It All Together

My must-attend sessions for advanced SEOs on Thursday have something in common — the opportunity to put things in perspective and to get in some serious Q&A. Thursday morning starts with the keynote The State Of The Search Union. Chris Sherman and a panel of experts (I’ve heard from a reliable source that web analytics guru Avinash Kaushik is already confirmed) will discuss where the search industry is today, following one of the most tumultuous and uncertain periods in our history.

Then jump over to Microsoft + Yahoo: What’s It All Mean? to get into the nitty gritty of how the search partnership could change what we do, where we go, and how we approach our roles as search marketers. The revealing big-picture conversations of this morning will put conference attendees in the frame of mind to evaluate and fit together all that’s under the umbrella of Internet marketing today. From there, it’s time to sort through any remaining questions during a series of Q&A sessions.

Ask The Search Engines, Ask The Link Builders and Ask The SEOs will all be taking place in the afternoon. When you’ve gotten what you can from the presentations of accomplished speakers, nothing helps solidify your understanding better than the chance to work through your remaining questions. I’ll be sitting on the expert-stuffed Ask The SEOs panel, eagerly awaiting any questions you’d like answered regarding search engine optimization today.

If you don’t have any questions to ask the SEO panel, or if you asked them on your own time while wandering the exhibit hall, definitely check out the Analytics Action Plans For PPC & SEO session happening at the same time. I’ve predicted that 2010 will be the year of Web analytics. Due to fluctuating search rankings and new universal search features, tracking and measuring activity on your site is critical for success.

Friday, March 5 — SEO Training Course Presented by Bruce Clay

After running around the conference hall for three days, help solidify your understanding of all you learned by settling in for a day of SEO training with me. Bruce Clay’s SEO Training is a full-day, intensive, face-to-face training class.

During the course I share my personal SEO tips and strategies with an intimate group of attendees. You’ll leave knowing exactly how I have helped clients rank and increase visibility and conversions for nearly 15 years. Plus you’ll walk away with a subscription to my full-featured suite of SEO diagnostic tools and a copy of my SEO desk reference guide.

Continuous learning and research are vital to keeping up with the competition. I hope my “Advanced SEO SMX West Dream Agenda” helps to narrow down the incredible learning opportunities offered at next month’s conference. With a pace of change and evolution as fast as you’ll find in the field of SEO, keeping up with the change is part of the job.

Hope to see you in Santa Clara! If you haven’t registered yet, there is still time!

We’re especially excited this year because we’re changing the format of SMX London to be similar to our always sold-out SMX Advanced show. We think the time is right to take things to the next level for the UK and European search marketing community.

Do you have a topic you’d like to see covered in a session at SMX Advanced London on May 17-18, 2010? Something you’d like to see covered in depth, or a discussion of advanced strategies and tactics for getting the most out your search marketing campaigns? If so, we’d like to hear from you. Please head over to the SMX session pitch form and describe your idea(s) for sessions at the show. Please include:

Proposed session title

One paragraph description of the session

Optional: Speakers who you think are most qualified for this panel

Remember that all sessions at SMX usually feature 3-4 speakers with 10-15 minutes each of speaking time, so please make sure your idea will accommodate that format. We’re not interested in any pitches for sessions where a single individual would speak for an entire session. And also please remember, no product or service pitches.

Ready to pitch? Please use the SMX session pitch form, and do not email Danny or Chris. These days we work with a team of people to help coordinate speaker selection. We need a centralized online system to help manage that process so things don’t slip through the cracks. By far the most reliable way to express interest in speaking is to go through the system – email too often gets overlooked or lost.

And don’t delay—we’ll be closing the session pitch form on February 19.

Key milestones for SMX Advanced London

This pitch form is for session ideas only. We will open up a separate pitch form for people to apply to speak on specific panels once the agenda is posted.

Session pitches open Feb 1, close Feb 19

Agenda posted & speaking pitches open week of Feb. 22

Speaking pitches close: March 19

Editor’s note: This SMX West Dream Agenda authored by Matt Van Wagner, and was originally published on Search Engine Land. Matt oversees programming of PPC sessions at SMX conferences.

I suppose the next best thing to dreaming about leaving the cold New Hampshire winter is to actually do it! Can’t think of a better way to toss off winter blahs than with a few days at SMX West.

Agenda Item #1 – Monday, Monday

I am planning to get in early on Sunday to soak up the sun for a day or so before my favorite part of the week: Monday night’s SMX Meet & Greet reception. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. This is the absolute best way to meet speakers and other attendees and make great connections in a relaxed comfortable setting. Don’t be shy. This is a very friendly crowd.

Day 1 – Ruby Tuesday

Absolutely don’t want to miss Steve Ballmer’s gem of a keynote. Microsoft has been doing nothing shy of re-engineering the entire search landscape for the past two years and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. What’s next for Microsoft? If there’s a news scoop – I don’t want to miss it.

The rest of Tuesday, I am going to make sure to take in the sessions dealing with mobile search and new ad formats. In the morning, I am definitely recommending the Mobile Paid Search Ads: Real Opportunities at 10:30am, and Not Your Father’s AdWords: The New Google Ad Formats right afterwards. I think that Microsoft has gotten Google’s competitive juices flowing big time, so I want to be sure to get the most current best practices for new ad formats.

The afternoon has a smorgasbord of great sessions, and even if you deal mostly with paid search, I seriously recommend the Ranking Tactics For Local Search and The Current State Of Social Search sessions. Both of these search marketing disciplines overlap with paid and non-paid tactics, and clients are always clamoring for recommendations in social search. Of course, I can’t go to the local session because I’ll be busy running the SMX Boot Camp: Paid Search Fundamentals. If you’re new to paid search, I invite you to come on in. I’ll guarantee you’ll learn and have fun at the same time!

Day 2 – Wednesday: Feelin’ Groovy

I know the word groovy is not groovy anymore which is strong proof that I am a geek. So the first thing on my list for Wednesday is to see who wins the SMX Biggest Search Geek award this year. Thank you, Marin Software, for recognizing the cream of the geek crop!

Later that morning, I am recommending Bring In The Bling Via Bing Cashback. Here’s why. Microsoft is giving away millions of dollars in rebates to consumers who buy from Bing advertisers. If you haven’t tried it or don’t know what it’s all about, come see how you can grab a big hunk of that Bing promotional pie for your company or your clients.

Wednesday afternoon has unbelievably potent sessions. If you are a small to mid-size advertiser, definitely take in Jen Laycock’s Your 90 Day SEM Fitness Plan. If you’ve already got your paid search in good shape, then the Facebook Ad Tactics For Search Marketers is going to be a blockbuster.

If you’ve got burning questions or need expert advice, check out Ask The Paid Search Buyers and Ask The Paid Search Reps. There’s more expertise per square inch in those panels than you’ll find anywhere.

See what I mean by Groovy Wednesday? Can’t go wrong with any choice you make.

Day 3 – Thursday Morning It Sure Looks Fine

And so does Thursday afternoon, for that matter. Thursday is packed full with PPC sessions from sunrise to sunset and, just like Groovy Wednesday, there are plenty of great choices to make.

I am absolutely recommending the PPC Tune-up Clinic with the SMX Mechanics, (and only partially because I’m moderating it.) Everyone loves these clinics when we review real live campaigns in action. A very jovial and expert panel will work on as many campaigns as you throw at them. They’ll roll up their mechanics shirts, diagnose your toughest problems and give you practical tips that will supercharge your PPC campaigns.

One dilemma for your Thursday agenda is that every time slot has two solid choices for paid search marketers. There are no bad choices and no easy choices, either. I recommend going with your gut instinct, rather than being too logical about it. One tip for you especially if you are new to SMX: Don’t be shy about leaving a session after a few minutes, especially if you were conflicted about choosing between two concurrent sessions. All speakers understand this sort of thing and no one gets offended if you leave a session early. Unless, of course, you leave with deep heavy sighs, swearing and muttering under your breath, and toppling desks and chairs on your way out. In that scenario, the speaker may understandably feel some dismay over your departure.

Here’s another tip for SMX newcomers and veterans alike. Even if your primary interest and job function is managing paid search, don’t rule out sessions outside your workday life. With so many top-notch speakers on social marketing, SEO, site architecture, link building and so on, take at least a session or two to explore all the other topics available to you. Check out the full agenda – you truly can customize your program.

Here’s one last tip before I go shovel off my car and try to drive home in yet one more winter blizzard. Carve out dedicated time in your schedule to visit the Expo hall. You will be amazed at the range of tools, services and vendors out there who have already solved problems that you knock your head against every day. We use about a dozen different tools in our business – all of whom we met at the Expo hall.

See you in Sunny Santa Clara! I look forward to meeting you there! Not registered yet? What are you waiting for – sign up today!

This post was originally published on Search Engine Land by SMX Boot Camp session coordinator Disa Johnson.

Need to get up to speed fast on search engine marketing? Here’s your “dream agenda” for Search Marketing Expo – SMX West (March 2-4 in Santa Clara, CA).

By following this agenda, you’ll get a comprehensive introduction to Search Engine Marketing, and maximize your investment in money and time. We highly recommend that beginners attend all of the Boot Camp sessions on Tuesday March 2. We’ve also made recommendations on sessions that follow, but feel free to attend sessions that interest you most.

New this year! Special SMX Boot Camp only pass. Read on to learn more…

Monday, March 1 – Arrival Day

Kick off your conference experience right by attending the SMX Meet & Greet. You’ll make great connections with others attending SMX: speakers, alumni and other first-time attendees. It’s just the right casual and friendly atmosphere to prepare you for the days ahead. Plus, you’ll get the chance to pick up your badge and conference materials so you can avoid the first day crowds (and maybe sleep in a bit!)

Tuesday, March 2 – Day 1 – SMX Boot Camp

This is a MUST for those new to search – or if you need a refresher on the fundamentals. SMX Boot Camp explores both search engine optimization (SEO) techniques – that’s the “free” stuff – as well as paid search advertising (pay per click/cost per click). Participate in all four Boot Camp sessions, and you’ll get a strong foundation in search engine marketing (SEM)…and a Certificate of Completion to hang in your work space.

But before you report for Boot Camp duty, you’ll have the opportunity to attend our featured keynote from Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. In his first address to the search marketing community, Steve will discuss what’s next for Bing, how the Bing/Yahoo relationship is progressing, and much more in an informal conversation with Search Engine Land editor-in-chief Danny Sullivan.

Then strap in for a jam-packed day of learning and discovery. Kick off Boot Camp with Keyword Research Tools & Techniques and learn how to determine what search terms your target audience is using and how you can tap into their traffic via search engines.

After lunch and a trip through the expo hall, build upon your newly gained keyword knowledge with the next session Copywriting For Search Success. Now that you have those keywords, learn how to incorporate them into your copy and create web pages that get picked up by search engines but are still user friendly.

Re-energize and refuel during the afternoon refreshment break and get ready for Boot Camp to switch gears and examine the “how to” of paid search advertising in Paid Search Fundamentals. You’ll learn the basics of purchasing placements on Google, Bing and other search engines, and the best practices of successful ads.

The final Boot Camp session looks at Search Engine Friendly Web Design. This is an incredibly important topic – if your site breaks for search engines, then it breaks for all those potential visitors from search engines. This session will give you the low down on creating search engine friendly sites that are attractive to both search engines and people.

Think your education is done for the day, now that you’ve graduated and gotten your diploma? Sure you can relax, grab a drink and some food at the Expo Hall Reception – but it is also a chance to network with attendees and the speakers you’ve heard from throughout the day. Plus there are some terrific tools and services to learn about from the SMX exhibitors – find a vendor who will help you do your job better!

Wednesday, March 3 – Day 2 – Pick Your Poison

Welcome back to Day 2 of SMX! Before you jump into today’s session, you might want to stop by and find out who won The Biggest Search Geek contest (and got a free ride, plane and all, to SMX West!) Who knows, after yesterday’s education maybe you’ll be on the stage next year!

Now that you have the basics down, you’re ready to tackle the rest of the SMX program. Days 2 and 3 offer 4 tracks each day, so you can customize your itinerary based upon your needs and focus. Two new additions to Wednesday’s line up which are perfect for those starting out…

Have a small business or small staff (and who doesn’t these days!)? Your 90 Day SEM Fitness Plan gives you practical tactics to shape up and implement your SEM strategy.

Daily we are bombarded with articles about social media and how it can help your business. Don’t know where to get started, or how you’ll ever find the time to keep things running? 60 Minutes Per Day For Social Media Success looks at how to succeed with social media marketing by spending an hour per day — or less!

Maybe you want to dig deeper into paid search? Two not-to-be missed sessions that are part of the afternoon Paid Search Track will give you the insight you need. Learn from your colleagues in Ask the Paid Search Buyers – and hear about their challenges and successes. Ask the Paid Search Reps lets you throw your questions out to reps from the major ad networks.

Thursday, March 4 – Day 3 – Getting the Answers

Start off your last day with a good breakfast – as you’ve seen by now, SMX doesn’t skim on food! Then hop right into learning with Link Building Fundamentals. Links are an important factor in influencing your search engine rankings. This session covers how search engines perform link analysis to rank pages and how to increase your traffic by building quality links.

Next up is a trio of sessions in the SEO Track in which you put the presenters on the spot. These sessions are your opportunity to customize what you learn by asking the experts questions. So make sure you don’t miss Ask The Search Engines, Ask The SEOs and Ask The Link Builders.

If you are part of (or lead) an in-house marketing team, you’ll want to check out the In-house Track, which explores the good, the bad and the how-to of bringing SEO and PPC activities in-house rather than outsourcing.

How about a peek at the future? In what is sure to be a compelling session, Microsoft + Yahoo: What’s It All Mean? will explore the changes that are coming and the nuances search marketers need to take into account once the Microsoft Yahoo deal is finally consummated.

Want to Attend? You’ve Got Options
